All the Delhi Travellers wanted for Christmas was a win.
Instead, the Mid-Western Junior C Hockey League team was handed its 30th-straight loss thanks to a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the Norwich Merchants on Boxing Day.
Much like its loss to the Burford Bulldogs prior to Christmas, goalie Patrick Tanner did everything possible to keep his team in the game facing 12 first-period shots to the Travellers’ two.
Darcey Butler was the only Merchant to score.
In the second period the Travellers offence woke up, firing 10 shots at Justin Pacheco. Unfortunately for the last-place team in the league, Mitchell Berzins, Jordan Everts and Troy Lamoure scored for the Merchants.
The Merchants continued to pour it on in the third, with Braeden Shand, Dalton Alford and Kyle Sault scoring on their team’s 11 shots.
The meeting between the Highway 59 rivals on Boxing Day was the first of what both teams hope is an annual event.
When the Travellers (and all of their previous incarnations) were a junior D team, they took on the Langton Thunderbirds in the annual game. Once they folded, the Travellers looked to rivals like the Burford Bulldogs and Hagersville Hawks.
The Travellers host the first-place Ayr Centennials Wednesday at 8 p.m., before hosting the New Hamburg Firebirds Friday at 7:30 p.m.
